Angel
One summer morning, my father took me up the gravel road to the top, all the way to where the road ends. Then we walked along the lane, which nature has narrowed into a path over the years, to the ruins of the last house in Vitovlje.
It was still dark. Mists below us. Then the sun shone a light on the place where we were standing. Nature was waking up before our eyes. I watched as the sun gradually woke up the hills below us, one by one, gilding the wheat fields in the valley. Then my father asked: “Yes or no?”; The feeling was great. I nodded, even though I didn’t know what he was asking me about. At that time, he already knew how the terraces of the future Angel vineyard would flow, which varieties would be planted. All that was missing was my satisfaction, which was in the word “yes”. This land was not ours. It had been owned by the same family for several decades, and on that day it was for sale for the first time in all these years. A few days later, my father overpaid for it at an auction. He offered all the money we had in the house at the time. Although it wasn’t clear to me at the time, now I do know that excellent land can never be overpaid.
